Dr. Irfan A. Handoo
Irfan A. Handoo was born in Columbia, Maryland. He grew up in Leawood, Kansas and graduated from Blue Valley North High School. Dr. Handoo earned his undergraduate degree from UMKC and his Medical Doctorate at the UMKC School of Medicine in 2005. After graduating from medical school, Dr. Handoo completed his residency at the University of Kansas Medical Center at Wichita, where he also completed a fellowship in psychopharmacology under the supervision of Dr. Sheldon Preskorn. Dr. Handoo does have experience in residency as a sub-investigator for clinical research trials. Dr. Handoo is Board Certified in Psychiatry and is a Diplomate of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. He is a member of the American Psychiatric Association.
Dr. Handoo believes in a comprehensive biopsychosocial approach to treating patients. He believes in the value of both medication management and psychotherapy and that the physician-patient relationship is the most important in medicine today. He enjoys meeting with patients and their families and takes into account all situations and circumstances in helping to formulate comprehensive diagnostic and treatment plans. Dr. Handoo has a flexible approach in treating patients and values the relationships he has with patients as one of the primary reasons that psychiatry has always appealed to him. Dr. Handoo believes in a compassionate approach to patients that takes into account their individual needs and is an empathetic and caring provider who takes the time to get to know his patients.
Dr. Handoo has been published in several journals, including The Journal of Child and Adolescent Psychopharmacology. Dr. Handoo sees patients for a wide variety of disorders, including but not limited to Major Depressive Disorder, Bipolar Disorder, Anxiety Disorders, ADHD, Schizophrenia, Schizoaffective Disorder, Eating Disorders, and Personality Disorders. Dr. Handoo has a clinical interest and extensive experience in Treatment-Resistant Depression and does see patients for IV Ketamine treatments for depression and TMS (Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation) for treatment-resistant depression. Dr. Handoo sees patients ages 15 and older in the adolescent, adult, and geriatric populations at the offices of Psychiatry Associates of Kansas City Leawood Kansas. Dr. Handoo is fluent in English, Spanish, and Urdu. He sees patients for both medication management and psychotherapy and is accepting new patients.
